General Information
Many different versions of telnet client software are commonly used on Windows PCs. The default programs included in Windows are the command line program and the more graphical HyperTerminal program. However, the popular programs appear to be TerraTremPro and CRT.
Most of the programs allow you to send files to Tivo using the sz or rz command. This either sends or receives a specified file using the z-modem protocol. The graphical programs have menus that automate the process and make it more straight-forward. See the HyperTerminal page for more detailed examples on how to send files via telnet.
The Programs
HyperTerminal: HyperTerminal is a program included with Windows that will allow you to connect to your Tivo via Telnet over a newtwork or over a serial connection.
TerraTerm: TerraTerm is an excellent (and free) termainal emulator and telnet client that has all of the features of HyperTerminal plus the added benefits of plug-ins, such as this SSH plug-in.
Command Line: A command line telnet client is available in all 32-bit versions of Windows. This version lacks file transfer capability and serial cable terminal emulation capabilities.
CRT: CRT is generally viewed as the preferred terminal program for connecting a Windows PC to Tivo. Other programs often will not display the Joe text editor correctly for whatever reason. However, CRT must be purchased for $35 after the 30-day trial expires.
