Tivo Serial Cable: (stand alone Tivo)
Serial cables that come with Stand Alone Tivos need a null modem adapter to be used with a PC. Replacement serial cables can be purchased directly from Tivo for about $7 + $5 shipping (these replacement cables also require a null modem adapter).

Build your own:
You can make your own serial cable using the following diagram. All parts are available a Radioshack. You will need to purchase 1/8" stereo mini-plug (3 conductors total including ground), wire, and a DB9-F serial cable connector. No null modem cable is required when using this wiring diagram. Total cost: about $5.

Other Sources:
9thtee.com also sells serial cables that do not require null modem adapters. Price is about $7 + $5 shipping.

If you own a Philips Pronto remote control, the cable that came with the remote (used to program the remote with a PC) can also be used to connect your Tivo to your PC. No modifications are needed.

The programming cable for a Texas Instruments TI-85/86 calculator will also work without modifications.

This will not work with a directtivo box, it has no diag console (in my case a sony sat-t60) unless you have already setup bash (so i hear).
