Several options are available for DHCP servers to dynamically assign an IP address to your Tivo:
Firewall / Internet Router / Switch:
The easiest way to roll-out a DHCP server is to buy one of these devices. It will assign all IP address to everything on your network, provide a basic NAT (network address translation) firewall, and allow all device to access your broadband internet connection.
The Netgear FVS318 is the best router currently available for home networks. It offers a true Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) Firewall, remore Virtual Private Network (VPN) access, and a DynamicDNS client so that you can automatically locate your LAN from anywhere on the internet.
Other manufacturers include SMC and Linksys. Search http://www.techbargains.com to find a good deal on a router. Typical cost is about $60 for a basic model and $120 for a full-featured model such as the Netgear FVS318. SPI routers are strongly recommneded.
It is recommended that a specific IP address be assigned to the Tivo everytime it connect to the DHCP server. The best way to do this is to specify an IP address based on the MAC address of the network card within the Tivo. For hardware routers, use your web browser to connect to the router and configure it to use the same IP address for the Tivo. For software DHCP servers, consult the software documentation.
